Does Acupuncture Hurt?

One of the most common concerns people have before trying acupuncture is whether the needles will be painful. In reality, most patients are surprised by how comfortable treatment feels.

It is completely normal to feel nervous before your first acupuncture appointment, especially if you are uncomfortable with needles. However, acupuncture needles are very different from the needles used for blood tests, injections, or vaccinations.

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, flexible, and designed to enter the skin with minimal discomfort. Many patients feel little to nothing when they are inserted, and some are surprised to learn that the needles have already been placed.

How Thin Are Acupuncture Needles?

The needles used for acupuncture are much finer than standard medical needles. Unlike injection needles, acupuncture needles are solid rather than hollow and do not need to be large enough to deliver medication or draw blood.

Several acupuncture needles can fit inside the opening of a typical hypodermic needle. Their small size is one of the main reasons treatment is usually much more comfortable than people expect.

What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?

Sensations can vary depending on the treatment area, the condition being addressed, and the individual patient. During insertion, you may feel a brief pinch or light pressure, although many needles are not felt at all.

Once a needle is in place, normal sensations may include:

• Warmth around the treatment area

• A brief sensation that travels along the body

These sensations are generally mild and temporary. They can be a normal response as the nervous system and surrounding tissues react to the treatment.

Should Acupuncture Be Painful?

Acupuncture should not feel sharply painful or intolerable. A brief sensation during insertion can occasionally happen, but persistent discomfort is not something you are expected to endure.

If a needle feels uncomfortable, let your practitioner know. The needle can be adjusted or removed immediately. Treatment should always be adapted to your comfort level.

Why Do Some Areas Feel More Sensitive?

Certain areas of the body naturally contain more nerve endings or may be more sensitive due to irritation, muscle tension, or injury. The hands, feet, face, and areas close to joints can sometimes produce a more noticeable sensation.

Your sensitivity may also change from one appointment to another based on sleep, stress, hydration, muscle tension, and the condition being treated.

What Happens After the Needles Are Inserted?

Once the needles are comfortably in place, you will usually rest for a period of time while the treatment takes effect. Most patients find this part of the appointment relaxing.

Some people become sleepy, feel a sense of calm, or notice their muscles gradually releasing. It is not unusual for patients to rest quietly or even fall asleep during treatment.
