What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Appointment
Everything you need to know before your first visit, from assessment to treatment and recovery.
If you've never had acupuncture before, it's completely normal to have questions. Many first-time patients wonder what the appointment will involve, whether the needles hurt, and what to expect during treatment.
At Aura Acupuncture, the goal is to make your first visit comfortable, informative, and personalized to your specific needs.
Your Initial Consultation
Every appointment begins with a conversation. We'll discuss your primary concern, how and when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, previous treatments you've tried, and any relevant medical history.
Depending on your condition, we may also discuss your work, daily activities, exercise routine, sleep, stress levels, and overall health.
Movement & Orthopedic Assessment
One aspect that sets my practice apart is a thorough movement assessment. Before beginning treatment, I evaluate how your body moves using range of motion testing, orthopedic tests, muscle and reflex testing, and functional movement assessments when appropriate.
These tests help identify movement restrictions, muscle imbalances, irritated tissues, and patterns contributing to your pain.
Your Personalized Treatment Plan
No two patients are exactly alike. Based on your consultation and assessment findings, I'll explain what may be contributing to your symptoms and discuss which treatment options are most appropriate for your condition.
Your treatment may include acupuncture alone or a combination of therapies designed to reduce pain, improve mobility, and support recovery.
Your Acupuncture Treatment
The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin. Most patients feel little to no discomfort during insertion. You may notice a mild ache, warmth, heaviness, tingling, or a brief sensation around the needle, which are all normal responses.
Once the needles are in place, you'll rest comfortably while the treatment takes effect. Many patients find this part of the appointment deeply relaxing.
Additional Therapies
Depending on your condition, treatment may also include electroacupuncture, cupping, cold laser therapy, Frequency Specific Microcurrent, tuina, acupressure, or gua sha.
These therapies may be used to help reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, support tissue healing, decrease pain, and improve movement.
After Your Treatment
After treatment, it's common to feel relaxed, lighter, or notice improved movement. Some patients feel relief right away, while others notice gradual improvement over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Mild soreness can sometimes occur, similar to how you might feel after exercise. This is usually temporary and resolves quickly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture feels. The needles are very fine, and many people feel little to no discomfort.
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your goals. Some patients notice improvement quickly, while others benefit from a series of treatments.
What should I wear?
Loose, comfortable clothing is best. If needed, gowns or draping are available to ensure your comfort and privacy.
